Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?

It's the question every small-business owner asks before spending a penny. Here's an honest answer - including when the answer is no.

The quick version

  • Google Ads works best when people already search for what you sell.
  • You can start small and only pay when someone clicks.
  • What matters is what a customer is worth to you, not the budget size.
  • If nobody searches for your service, your money is better spent elsewhere.

Let's be honest from the start: Google Ads isn't magic, and it isn't right for every business. But for a lot of small and local firms, it's one of the most reliable ways to get the phone ringing - if it's set up sensibly.

When Google Ads works well

The big question is simple: are people already searching for what you offer? If someone in your area is typing "emergency plumber", "dentist near me" or "wedding florist Brighton", Google Ads can put you right in front of them at the moment they want to buy. That intent is gold - the person already has a need and a wallet open.

You only pay when someone clicks

Unlike a billboard or a magazine ad, you don't pay just to be seen on Google Ads - you pay when someone actually clicks through to you. You set a daily budget you're comfortable with, and you can start small. That makes it far less of a gamble than most traditional advertising.

The number that really matters

Forget "how much should I spend?" for a second. The number that decides whether ads are worth it is what a customer is worth to you. If a new customer is worth £500 and you spend £50 in ads to win them, that's a brilliant trade. If they're worth £20, the maths is much tighter. Work this out first, and everything else gets clearer.

A quick gut check

  • Do people search online for what you do? (If yes, that's a strong sign.)
  • Is a new customer worth a fair bit more than the cost to win them?
  • Can you handle more enquiries if they come in?
  • Can you commit a small budget for a few months to gather real data?

When the answer is no

If almost nobody searches for your service, or your margins are wafer-thin, Google Ads might not be the best home for your money - and a good agency will tell you that rather than take your budget. Sometimes local SEO, your Google Maps listing, or word of mouth will do more for less.
